The names of the 1,177 sailors and marines who perished on the ship are etched in marble inside this hushed memorial.

There were 37 sets of brothers, including one set of twins and three sets of three brothers, who were serving on the ship, in addition to a father and son. Sixty two of the 77 brothers were lost.

The Becker's, Doherty's, and Murdock's were the family names with three brothers; Free is the father's and son's family name; and Delbert (DJ) and John (JP) Anderson were the twins.
